The main house is dated 1907 yet is built in a much earlier baronial style with snecked rubble and broached ashlar dressings under a slate roof. It was built by the architect Andrew Millar of Gardner & Millar of Glasgow for his own use. Boghall House is listed Category B.
The house is built on three floors and offers flexible accommodation, with much of its original character intact.
A circular entrance vestibule leads to a magnificent reception hallway which also serves as an informal sitting room. It has a box bay window overlooking open countryside and a door leading directly onto the front garden. It has a polished wooden floor and leads to the drawing room, dining room and inner hallway.
The triple aspect drawing room is over 25 ft in length. It has a corner bay window and French doors leading to the side garden. A brick fireplace with open fire and copper hood dominates one wall
The dining room is most formal with an open fire set into a Delft tiled surround and carved stone fireplace. There is a second door to the inner hallway. Off the inner hallway are the butler's pantry with original fitted units with brass handles and a silver room with similar fitted units and a wooden sink.
Th substantial sized kitchen has been recently modernised but still in keeping with the buildings original character offering a range of wall and base mounted units. Opening off it are a flower room with pantry, a large utility room , and a hall with back door and access to a fuel store and a WC.
A panelled cloakroom with separate WC opens off the reception hall and completes the ground floor accommodation.
The first floor can be reached by the staircase from the reception hallway or a staff stairway from the inner hallway.
The first floor landing and main staircase are illuminated by a wonderful leaded window with main stone mullions and stained glass windows in an Arts and Crafts style.
Off the first floor landing are four bedrooms and a purpose built children's nursery / playroom. The master bedroom is at the southern end of the house and off it is a large dressing room with fitted shower. Two of the other bedrooms share a jack n Jill four piece bathroom, there is a further double bedroom with an adoining shower, a linen room / single bedroom completes the accommodation on this level.
A spiral staircase in the entrance turret ascends to the second floor. Off the landing on this level is what was originally used as the 'billiard room' recently used as master bedroom, an impressive bathroom with roll top bath and separate walk in double shower and two large dressing fully fitted fitted dressing rooms
The views from the second floor are particularly impressive looking southwest over rolling countryside, towards the woodland beyond, with the tower of Schaw House visible on a clear day in the distance.
A boiler room is attached to the main house. Within the grounds are a detached wooden tractor shed with felt roof, a partially glazed potting shed and a substantial heated timber greenhouse.
The formal gardens of Boghall are quite remarkable. Through wonderful stone gateposts, with wooden gate, is the driveway which sweeps past Boghall Lodge towards the main house. To the rear is a belt of trees providing privacy from the main road and a large, well kept level lawn which would at one time have been used as a tennis court. Throughout the gardens there are e magnificent mature trees and rhododendrons
At the south of the house a further formal lawn wraps itself around the front of the house and around the north side. A mature beech hedge divides it from the neighbouring fields and at the foot of the formal gardens is a pretty stream. There is a kitchen garden, with a greenhouse and potting shed.
