Development first began in Kilcreggan in 1840 when the use of steamers on the Clyde made it more accessible. The first houses were used only as summerhouses, but as time went on, permanent occupation took place. As roads and vehicles developed, steamer traffic declined, and one by one, the piers closed. Today, Kilcreggan Pier remains the only traditional pier on the Clyde still in daily use. Directions

Go west on the M8 and over the Erskine Bridge, before turning left and north onto the A82. Stay on the A82, past Dumbarton and Balloch. For the best route do not turn off to Helensburgh, but carry on for another five minutes and take the A817 to Garelochhead.

Look behind to see Loch Lomond stretched out below and then pass up and through the wild Fruin valley and down to a roundabout where you take the sign right for RNAD Coulport and again at the next roundabout. Cross the peninsula now on a high wide road to the roundabout by RNAD Coulport. Take the first exit and follow along the seafront for about 6 miles, through the village of Cove, and then turn left up School Road in Kilcreggan. Take the first right into Argyll Road and Oakdene House is on the right at the top of the hill.
