The houses making us want to stay in this Valentine’s Day

If battling for a restaurant reservation (and your dignity) on Valentine’s Day isn’t your idea of romance, may we suggest something a little more… homegrown? We’ve been playing matchmaker on OnTheMarket and found some swoon-worthy properties that make staying in the new going out.

Because nothing says “I love you” like a roaring fire, a roll-top bath and absolutely no prix fixe menu in sight.

Tigh An Tuir, Scotland

Looking for a love story with a turret twist? This Scottish castle is giving full fairytale energy. Think bluebell-dotted grounds, woodland wanders, dreamy ponds and a library just begging for a slow-burn romance (and an actual roaring fire).
It’s the kind of place where you dramatically gaze out of a window and whisper, “Is that you, my love?” — only for them to be five metres away asking if you’ve seen the snacks.

A house with ivy growing up the side and a turret at the front, with a bright red door. A lawn sits at the front with woodland at the back.

Valentine’s ideas:

  • Get cosy by the fire in the library.
  • Take a hand-in-hand stroll through the grounds and pretend you’re in a period drama.
  • Climb the turret and request someone let down their hair. Bonus points for commitment to the bit.

Palm Cottage, Kent

If cottages could blush, this one would. Palm Cottage looks like it’s wandered straight out of a storybook — part fairy tale, part happily-ever-after. With warm tones, whimsical charm and a copper bath that deserves its own slow-motion montage, this is peak cosy-core romance.

There’s even a garden house with a log burner. Translation: outside vibes, inside temperature control. We love a balanced relationship.

Valentine’s ideas:

  • Light the fire in the garden house and toast to your cottage-core era.
  • Fill that copper tub with bubbles, rose petals and your best “spa voice.”
  • Bake something delicious in the kitchen and call it a “magic cake.” (Even if it’s from a packet. We don’t judge.)

Moat Hall, York

If you’ve ever watched a rom-com and thought, “Yes, I will live there one day,” this is your sign. Moat Hall is giving Nacy Meyers with lavender-lined pathways, vine-wrapped pergolas and a lawn so perfectly flat it’s basically whispering, “marquee me.”

The house says cosy countryside. The grounds say “save the date.”

Valentine’s ideas:

  • Casually “just discuss” what your wedding might look like. No pressure.
  • Sip tea in the loggia and practise your wedding speech.
  • Decide whose parents get the separate cottage. (Proceed with caution.)

Tulach Ard, Scotland

If your love language is quality time (and possibly tartan), Tulach Ard is your ultimate escape. Remote, romantic and rugged in all the right ways, this Scottish retreat comes complete with loch-side sauna. Yes, you read that correctly.

It’s giving “windswept romance” meets “luxury wilderness chic.”

Valentine’s ideas:

  • Hike through the mountains and earn that indulgent evening feast.
  • Brave a quick dip in the loch, followed by a longggg sauna session. (Character building. And thawing.)
  • Serenade each other at the piano. Even if your only song is three chords and confidence.

Sunday Cottage, Somerset

Romance begins at the blush pink door and frankly, we were sold before we’d even stepped inside. Sunday Cottage is snug, sweet and steeped in history, complete with an original bread oven and charming serving hatch.

You can practically hear the love stories whispering from the walls (or that might just be the sourdough starter).

Valentine’s ideas:

  • One luxuriates in the bath while the other curls up in the window seat with a book. Balance is key.
  • Wander hand-in-hand along the river towards Frome Castle.
  • Bake fresh sourdough and let the smell do the flirting.
