Living in Leicester
Leicester is one of the oldest cities in England with many visual references to its Roman and Medieval heritage across the city and county. Leicester is centrally located in England, just over one hour by train to London and a 40 minute drive to Birmingham or East Midlands airports. The city has risen to world prominence in recent times. Leicester has, for many years had a great sporting heritage with successful professional football, rugby, cricket, basketball and speedway teams. But over more recent times the discovery and reinterment of King Richard III, the pioneering of DNA fingerprinting at Leicester University and the opening of the National Space Centre have all pushed the city onto the world stage.
Leicester’s industrial heritage is hosiery, textiles and footwear. This continues today although many of the city’s hosiery mills have moved to purpose built units.
